Hello Friend,
You are holding a journal that has been given to you by a fellow traveler, and has been passed from person to person ever since. Inside, you will find the thoughts, drawings, and notes of everyone who has held it before you. We now invite you to take up its free pages and add your own contribution — your thoughts, drawings, doodles, letters, and observations. Write freely, but write for others: this journal belongs not to any one of us, but to all who carry it forward.
We ask only two things. First, that you be respectful of those who came before you and those who will come after. Second, that you keep out any personally identifiable details — names, photos of faces, addresses, or anything else that could identify you or someone else.
You are writing to and for humanity. Keep in mind the words of Walt Whitman:
“That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.”
When you feel ready to part with this journal, please pass it along to another traveler, or to someone you feel would appreciate it. If you are the one who fills its final page, we ask that you bring it to a local library, explain what it is and what it represents, and request that they add it to their collection — so that what has been written here may endure, even as each of us moves on.
And if this journal's journey should end before it is full, that is alright too. Not every story needs an ending to have mattered.
Finally, should you wish to set a new journal loose into the world, we ask only that you begin it with a quality notebook, and that you copy this letter — along with its translations — onto its opening pages, so that the tradition may continue.
Sincerely,
— Fellow Keepers
